Grading Criteria for theses:

In order for the essay to pass, it must have a clear research focus that should be reflected in the discussion. Empirical data and the theoretical framework should apply to the given research question and the author should carry out an independent discussion, not only put together disparate data from various sources. To receive a high grade (A-B) you will have to employ a broad perspective and a general understanding of the discipline. The theory should be based on solid empirical facts and you should master the language well.

A – Excellent

  • An interesting research question and/or interpretation with a convincing discussion displaying integrity and originality
  • An extensive (in relation to the context) and correctly treated empirical material to which a relevant theoretical framework is applied independently and with high skill
  • A clear and logical structure in which theory and empirical data reflect and explain the research question and each other as an integrated whole
  • A very good feeling for language and a correct use of academic reference tools

B – Very Good

  • An interesting research question and/or interpretation with a convincing and independent discussion
  • Sufficient empirical data with a relevant and competently applied theoretical framework
  • A clear and logical structure in which theory and empirical data reflect and explain the research question and each other as an integrated whole
  • A good feeling for language and a correct use of academic reference tools

C – Good

  • A coherent discussion of a distinct research question
  • Acceptable treatment of empirical data and a correctly applied theoretical framework
  • A logical disposition where theory and empirical facts reflect and explain the research question and each other as an integrated whole
  • Good language skills and a correct use of academic reference tools

D – Satisfactory

  • An acceptable overall picture that discusses the research question through limited but intelligibly presented empirical data and a relatively correctly apprehended theoretical framework
  • Acceptable language skills, use of academic reference tools without appalling flaws in usage

E – Sufficient

  • An acceptable connection between research question and a relatively coherent discussion
  • Empirical facts and theoretical framework without major misinterpretations, correct basic facts
  • Understandable language, satisfactory use of academic reference tools

Fx – Unsatisfactory

  • One or more of the following shortcomings:
    - Incoherent as a whole
    - Insufficient link between research question and discussion or between empirical material and theory
    - Obvious misunderstandings
    - Lack of necessary empirical or theoretical material.
    - Careless mistakes, too short or too rhapsodic
    - Insufficient language skills
    - Possible to revise within a reasonable time frame (10 days)

F – Unacceptable

  • See Fx, with the difference that it in this case is not believed that the essay can be revised to an acceptable level within ten days. A complete change of topic and a fresh start is recommended.
