Isabella Strömberg joined the Department of Social Anthropology as a PhD student in September 2015. Her main research interests are related to compulsory school education and the social reproductive features of the Swedish school system. Prior to starting her PhD studies, Isabella was involved in the project Reducing Early School Leaving in Europe (resl.eu) as a research assistant. She received her MSc from Stockholm University in 2014, with the thesis entitled Det krympande klassrummet. The thesis deals with the issues of how teachers in a Swedish secondary school perceive their changing professional role and how concepts such as competition, transparency and auditing have become natural parts of the school environment. Det krympande klassrummet was awarded with an honourable mention by Stockholmia- forskning och förlag and Samfundet St: Erik

For her PhD project, Isabella is studying the relationships between civil society, young students and compulsory school in a regular sized Swedish town. She is interested in what influence the engagement in local organizations, associations and networks might have on young students and their perceptions of education and possible futures.
