Mattias Viktorin received his PhD degree in Social Anthropology from Stockholm University in 2008. He has been a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, and Senior Lecturer in Cultural Anthropology at Uppsala University. Previously he was also the Secretary of the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography (SSAG).

Research

Much of Viktorin’s research has centred on organizational culture in contemporary society. His PhD project, “Exercising Peace: Conflict Preventionism, Neoliberalism, and the New Military,” which was funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, investigated civil-military collaborations at the intersection of security and humanitarianism in order to understand how various actors, concepts, and organizational techniques converge in contemporary forms of military intervention. His post-doc project, “Future for Sale: Temporality and Knowledge in the Work of Market Research Consultancies,” which also was funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, focused on the methods market research consultancies use to make “future markets” appear as objects about which knowledge is possible.

More recently, Viktorin’s interests have shifted toward the anthropology of literature and the philosophy of art, and in his current project, “A World Apart and the World at Large: Expressing Siberian Exile,” he explores travel literature and narratives of Siberian exile from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Funded by the Swedish Foundation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, this research is carried out under the auspices of the program “World Literatures: Cosmopolitan and Vernacular Dynamics,” based at Stockholm University and led by Professor Stefan Helgesson.
